Understanding common lung conditions

Lung health is crucial to overall wellbeing, yet many people are unaware of the common conditions that can affect their respiratory system. In this article, we’ll explore several prevalent lung conditions – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchitis – providing an overview of their symptoms, treatments available and guidance on when to seek medical help.

“As we recognize Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we highlight the vital role of early detection and the benefits of screening and smoking cessation. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., emphasizing the need for awareness and prevention,” said Rabih Halabi, MD, System Division Chief of Pulmonary Medicine, Inova and Medical Director of Outpatient Respiratory Care Services, Inova Health System.

“At Inova Pulmonology, our team is committed to addressing this issue through comprehensive screening programs and advanced diagnostics for conditions like COPD. We offer smoking cessation support, pulmonary rehabilitation, and specialized care for various lung diseases,” Dr. Halabi noted. “Our goal is to improve the quality of life for our patients and guide them in both disease management and prevention. We’re here to support our patients every step of the way.”

About asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to difficulty breathing.

Symptoms of asthma include:

  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Frequent coughing, especially at night or during physical activity

Asthma triggers:

  • Exercise: may get worse in cold and dry air
  • Allergens: dust, animal fur, mold and pollen
  • Irritants: cigarette smoke, air pollution, chemicals or dust
  • Medicines: aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Illness: viral or bacterial upper respiratory infections

Treatment for asthma

There is no cure for asthma, but it can be treated and controlled. The most effective way to control asthma is to manage and avoid triggers, but the majority of asthma treatment typically involves the use of inhalers. There are two main types:

  • Rescue inhalers (bronchodilators) provide quick relief during an asthma attack
  • Long-term control medications (inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta2 agonists or combination inhalers) help reduce inflammation and prevent symptoms
  • Biologic medications: injections of monoclonal antibodies can help patients with uncontrolled asthma

When to seek help for asthma symptoms

If you experience frequent asthma attacks, if you have difficulty breathing even with medication or if your symptoms worsen, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider.

About COPD

COPD is a progressive lung disease that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, primarily caused by long-term exposure to harmful substances, most commonly tobacco smoke. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is an inherited genetic condition in which the liver does not produce enough of a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin. The majority of patients with AATD develop COPD.

Symptoms of COPD include:

  • Chronic cough (often with mucus)
  • Shortness of breath, especially during physical activities
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Fatigue

Treatment for COPD

While there is no cure for COPD, treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life:

  • Smoking cessation
  • Bronchodilators to relax the muscles around the airways, including short-acting or long-acting bronchodilators (LABA)
  • Inhaled corticosteroid medications (ICS): can help reduce inflammation of the airways and help prevent exacerbations
  • Long-acting anti-muscarinic agents (LAMA)
  • Combined bronchodilators plus inhaled glucocorticoids, or even triple inhaled therapy with ICS, LAMA and LABA
  • Oral steroids to reduce inflammation and treat COPD exacerbations
  • Phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors: a newtype of medication that decreases airway inflammation and can help relax the airways
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation programs that include exercise, nutrition and education
  • Oxygen therapy for patients with evidence of hypoxemia
  • Biologics medication (dupilumab): a monoclonal antibody that was recently approved by the FDA as a treatment option for COPD patients with an eosinophilic phenotype

When to seek help for COPD symptoms

If you notice an increase in shortness of breath, difficulty completing daily activities or a change in your cough or sputum, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider.

About bronchitis

Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term).

Symptoms of bronchitis include:

  • Persistent cough (often with mucus)
  • Wheezing
  • Chest discomfort
  • Fatigue

Treatment for bronchitis

Acute bronchitis usually resolves on its own; treatment focuses on relieving symptoms. Over-the-counter medications, rest and hydration are typically recommended in cases of acute viral bronchitis. Antibiotics are prescribed for patients with acute bacterial bronchitis.

Chronic bronchitis may require bronchodilators, steroids and lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation.

When to seek help for bronchitis symptoms

If you have a cough lasting more than three weeks, experience shortness of breath or notice blood in your mucus, you should seek medical attention.

Recognizing lung conditions: the key to early action

Understanding these common lung conditions is the first step toward maintaining good respiratory health. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above or have concerns about your lung health, don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can make a significant difference in your quality of life and overall wellbeing. Other common lung conditions our team at Inova Pulmonology helps manage include chronic cough, pulmonary nodules, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, sleep apnea, pulmonary hypertension, occupational lung diseases, pleural disease including pleural effusions and pulmonary vascular diseases.
