Each year, about 36,000 people in the U.S. die from causes related to seasonal flu, while more than 200,000 people are hospitalized. An annual flu vaccination is safe and convenient, and can be up to 90 percent effective in protecting against this serious illness. The recommendation is that everyone over 6 months of age should get an annual flu shot.
A flu shot cannot give you the flu. The flu vaccine contains dead flu viruses that cannot multiply or cause infection. Some people get mild flu-like symptoms, especially those being vaccinated for the first time. This is the result of the body’s immune response as it builds protection against actual infection. These symptoms can include mild fever, headache and muscle aches and usually end within 24 to 48 hours.
Inova Health System is one of Northern Virginia’s largest providers of flu shots, with Inova’s highly trained nurses vaccinating as many as 80,000 people each year. For more information about immunizations and other flu-related services, call 703-750-8818 or visit inova.org/flu.
