U.S. News & World Report Names Inova Fairfax Medical Campus #1 Hospital in DC Area
Inova Health System’s Gynecology Program Nationally Ranked
Falls Church, VA. – Inova Fairfax Medical Campus was named the #1 hospital in the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area for the 5th time, according to U.S. News & World Report 2019-20 Best Hospitals rankings. Inova’s Gynecology department is the highest ranked in the region and #13 in the country. Of Inova Health System’s five hospitals, three ranked in the top ten in the DC region.
The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 30th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. This prestigious award is based on a number of key measures, including patient satisfaction.

Inova Fairfax Medical Campus includes Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Children’s Hospital, Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, Inova Schar Cancer Institute and Inova Women’s Hospital. The campus is also home to Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and offers organ transplant programs for heart, lung, kidney and pancreas.
Inova Women’s Hospital offers the area’s largest gynecology programs, with dedicated operating rooms and recovery facilities. The gynecology department has access to the latest in clinical trials and state-of-the-art technology, and offers the region’s largest and most respected program for the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. Inova has the first area hospitals to perform many of the minimally invasive procedures that improve women’s outcomes while minimizing the impact of these procedures on quality of life. The Labor & Delivery unit is one of the largest in the nation, offering women a wide range of services from routine deliveries to the most complex maternal-fetal care.
This year’s U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital rankings also designated Inova Fairfax Medical Campus as #3 in Virginia. Inova Alexandria Hospital ranks #5 this year in Washington, DC, and #8 in the state. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is ranked #8 in DC and #11 in Virginia.
Inova Fairfax Hospital received “High Performing” recognition in nine specialties: nephrology, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart bypass, heart failure, knee replacement and lung cancer surgery. Inova Alexandria Hospital was rated as High Performing in the areas of nephrology, heart failure care, COPD care, hip replacement and knee replacement. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital was rated as High Performing in urology, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, hip replacement and knee replacement. Inova Loudoun Hospital was High Performing in heart failure, and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in knee replacement and hip replacement.
For the 2019-20 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 165 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
