Inova Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center Opens in Fairfax

Leading health system introduces the region’s first dedicated cancer screening and prevention center in the Washington, DC metro region

Falls Church, VA — The Inova Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center officially opens today in Fairfax, Virginia. Located in the pavilion of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute flagship facility at 8081 Innovation Park Drive, this comprehensive care facility is the first of its kind in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, and among only a few like it in the country, serving as a coordinated cancer screening and prevention center for people at both average and high risk.

More than 40 percent of cancer cases in the United States are attributed to preventable risk factors. Through a care model of lifestyle mentoring and intervention, the center will provide comprehensive screening and prevention services for cancers including breast cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, head and neck cancers, melanoma and skin cancer, and gynecological cancers. Services are also available for those at average risk who want to learn about ways to modify or change their lifestyle to reduce their risk of developing cancer.

Rebecca Kaltman, MD, serves as Executive Director of Inova’s new Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center.

“While most people know that early detection saves lives, not everyone knows where to start or has access to quality care,” says Rebecca Kaltman, MD, Executive Director, Inova Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center. “This new state of the art facility provides greater access to routine cancer screening as well as a comprehensive approach to minimizing cancer risk through techniques including biometric assessments, genetic testing and novel, minimally invasive tools to improve early detection.”

Thanks to a generous $20 million donation from Paul and Linda Saville, the 24,000 square-foot research and clinical facility will increase access to world-class care and maximize each patient’s health and wellbeing by offering multiple services in one location.

The new center was conceived by Inova Schar Cancer Institute President John Deeken, MD and Dr. Kaltman, who also will also serve as Endowed Chair of the center. Together, they will lead a team of specialists, surgeons, genetic counselors and nurses on a mission to educate patients about the importance of cancer screening and early detection, offering cutting-edge technology and research and guiding patients on their cancer journey through education and compassionate care.

“When Linda and I learned about the vision to build a comprehensive cancer screening and prevention program and how our investment could help bring this life-saving vision to our community, we were inspired to lead this effort,” says Mr. Saville, who is also a member of the Northern Virginia community through his role as President and CEO of NVR, Inc. “We know the Inova Saville Center will serve as a model for best practices in cancer prevention on a regional and national level.”

“More than 9 million people skipped routine cancer screening during the pandemic and we have learned that delayed screenings and care can have a significant impact on one’s health, especially when it comes to cancer diagnoses,” says Deeken. “We hope that by providing our neighbors with accessible, multidisciplinary screening and prevention services and a ‘one-stop-shop’ approach, we will help our community get back on track with their health and cure more cancers through early detection and intervention.”
