Inova Invests More than $321 Million in Northern Virginia Health Outcomes

2022 Community Report showcases commitment to health equity and access to quality care

Fairfax, VA — Inova Health System has released its 2022 Community Report, highlighting the system’s significant investment in the Northern Virginia community. The investment is a testament to Inova’s continued dedication to enhancing excellence in patient care; a commitment to team member wellbeing; and diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2022, Inova invested $321 million in charity care, medical education, clinical research, and unreimbursed Medicaid costs.

Across the nation, hospitals and healthcare systems play a major role not only in their communities’ health, but also their financial vitality. Inova’s hospitals and services enhance the neighborhoods where its patients and team members live, work and play, providing an essential part of the fabric of Northern Virginia. Inova’s role as a member of the Healthcare Anchor Network includes multiple components that enhance health equity, including:

  • Community Health (neighborhood clinics, programs, and community engagement)
  • Local Hiring (workforce development for youth and adults from local, diverse communities)
  • Local Investment (grants, financial opportunities; volunteering in the community)
  • Local Procurement (purchasing from local vendors; building local economies)
  • Evidence-Based Data (stewardship driven by community health needs assessments)

“At Inova, community investment is at the heart of our mission, and our focus on the wellbeing of all our community is a deliberate and collaborative effort,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO, Inova. “We recognize that health equity goes beyond providing medical services; it involves addressing the broader social, economic, and environmental factors that impact our health. By investing in community programs, initiatives, and partnerships, we strive to provide access to the best quality care for everyone in every community we have the privilege to serve.”

Inova is committed to working collaboratively with our community to address the root causes of health disparities. In 2022, Inova:

  • Established our Social Drivers of Health Patient Survey to help identify patients experiencing food insecurity, housing needs, behavioral health concerns, fentanyl exposure and other factors that have an impact on health
  • Awarded a record $1 million in Health Equity Grants to 23 local nonprofits supporting health and wellbeing in our region
  • Opened Northern Virginia’s first Pride Clinic, a dedicated medical clinic to meet the specific health needs of the LGBTQ+ community
  • Launched Dream B!G, a program to expose and provide a career development path in healthcare for under-resourced communities.
  • Hosted 200 students at BLOOM! (Building Learning Opportunities and Options in Medical Sciences), engaging healthcare professionals with hands-on clinical experiences
  • Opened the Inova Cares Clinic – Behavioral Health, providing adult mental health counseling services to individuals who are underinsured, uninsured, or have Virginia Medicaid coverage
